Perhaps one of the worst parts of winter isn't even the cold - it's the waiting...
Haithabu, Current-Day Germany ; Latter half of the 10th Century. While slavery was likely quite common in heavy trading settlements such as Haithabu, it is also likely most farmers lacked the funds to acquire such expensive commodities, meaning they had to look after the farms themselves year round, resulting in many cold winter days mending broken boards, doors, roofs, tending livestock, and ensuring there were enough stores saved up to last the family through the harsh Danish winter.
