The trading city of Kaupang, not only a heavily-traveled trading center, but also the seat of Norwegian power from the 8th and 9th centuries, would be abandoned for the most part by the middle part of the 10th Century. Much like in later years, the individual would carry his own existence equipment, while larger camp items (such as tents, cookwear, etc.) would be carried in the baggage train by carts, oxen, and horses when travelling by land.
