Maintenance of tools, such as small utility knives, would have been essential to surviving the tough life of the Viking Age, and one item crucial to this was the whetstone. Many of these have been recovered from the settlement of Haithabu, some of which bore elaborate wire and metal hangers and rings, indicating they were highly prized items by their owners.
